Prosas [Prose]

José Díaz Fernández (Aldea del Obispo, Salamanca, 1898 – Toulouse, 1941) is one of the most relevant figures within the group of young intellectuals who became well known during the 1920s. This volume highlights the importance of his contributions to the literature of those decades by gathering the essential core of his writings and essays, which served to make him one of the most noteworthy voices of republican literature.

Nigel Dennis, Faculty Chair of Contemporary Spanish Literature at the University of St. Andrews, United Kingdom and author of numerous studies on the most relevant writers of the first third of the 20th century was responsible for compiling this volume.

Obras literarias [Literary works]

This volume features an excellent sample of Rafael Dieste’s work (Rianxo, 1899  -  Santiago de Compostela, 1981), including poetry, stories, playwriting, journalism, philological, and even mathematical essays. A highly creative and bilingual writer, he was also able to positively influence a number of tensions brewing between Galicia and Spain. Dieste’s character lay between being a common man and cultured, and between traditional and the avant-garde.

Darío Villanueva, the Faculty Chair of theory of Compared Literature of the University of Santiago de Compostela, was responsible for the selection and prologue of the compilation’s texts.

Miradas sobre el presente: ensayos y sociología [A look at the present: essays and sociology]

Francisco Ayala (Granada, 1906 – Madrid, 2009), is a classic name among world literature of the 20th century. His role as a sociologist and essayist is, unfortunately, less known by the general public, despite its considerable value. For this reason, this anthology, edited the year of the centenary of his birth, aims to bring the reader closer to some of his most important essays and sociological articles on current issues or that offer us a clear interpretation on a number of relevant problems.

Doctor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Alberto J. Ribes Leiva. was responsible for selecting the texts included in this volume.

Materiales para una biografía [Material for a biography]

Dionisio Ridruejo was virtually exiled from public life after his return from the División Azul (Blue Division) in 1942. Materiales Para una Biografía includes letters and journals of his experience in Russia with the División Azul, as well as other works that reflect his profound intellectual strength and depth. Ridruejo wrote the most insightful and illuminating pages on the fascist phenomenon in Spain and was able to explain the steps between signing two verses of the Cara al Sol (Spanish Falange party Anthem) and supporting a ‘left-wing without rhetoric’.

Jordi Gracia, Professor of Literature at the University of Barcelona, and the author of several books on the intellectual history of Spain in the 20th century, was responsible for selecting the texts for this current volume.

Casticismo, nacionalismo y vanguardia

This anthology of Ernesto Giménez Caballero (Madrid, 1899-1988) reflects a steel penned writer, with a risky style and a vocation for essay-writing that was fundamental in the Spanish literature of the ‘30s. He was the promoter of the so-called generation of ’27 and other young talented writers of the time. His literary work lay undiscovered due to his political commitments. Some of his works included in the present volume are Los Toros, Las Castañuelas y  la Virgen or Arte y Estado.

José Carlos Mainer, literary historian and critic, was responsible for selecting and writing the prologue of this work by one of the most important authors from the Spanish avant-garde movement.
