Fundación Banco Santander sponsors Gira, the educational programme set up by Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía to forge stable relationships with a variety of stakeholders, explore artistic creation as a methodology and promote education as a method of autonomous cultural production.

During the lockdown, Gira adapted its content to the new circumstances and offered daily activities allowing all kinds of audiences to enjoy culture at home. These activities included: ‘Comunidades Gira’, which invited families, teenagers and elderly people to reinterpret the works in the collection collectively, and ‘Brillante’, which used a technique known as ‘cinema without film’ in which a narrative is created using only gestural language, offering a different approach to art.

The museum also has a study centre, where different training and research initiatives relating to art, society, the economy and politics in the contemporary world are carried out. In 2020, all academic programmes that could be taught via the online platform continued and virtual study groups were created to exchange and collectively produce knowledge. In 2020, 20,817 people participated in the activities organised as part of the educational programme at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Fundación Banco Santander collaborates with Fundación MACBA to develop its continuous teacher training programme. The aim is to provide training in contemporary art for teachers at primary level, secondary level, baccalaureate level and vocational training schools to improve their confidence in teaching the contemporary art section of the educational curriculum and equip them with resources for working on artistic dynamics in the classroom.

The museum has adapted the programme’s content to the new conditions arising as a result of the public health measures put in place. With a view to maintaining its ties with the educational community, it has reinforced its online teaching and established a protocol to allow teachers to visit the facilities safely.

In 2020, the following activities were held: the virtual course ‘Jugando con la Colección MACBA’; the ‘P2P. De igual a igual’ workshops led by Violeta Ospina, and ‘Tecnocolonialismo de bolsillo’ led by creators Jara Rocha and Joana Moll. In addition, a call was launched for the 4th edition of the working group made up of teachers, educators and members of the museum team to reflect on the MACBA Collection and other matters linked to the art world.

The programme trained 325 teachers in 2020.

The foundation collaborates with the Centre d’Art la Panera in Lérida on the MiniPanera educational project, which was created to make contemporary art accessible to young children. This educational space offers its own programme of events relating to the centre’s exhibitions and other educational projects, which is aimed at a younger audience. MiniPanera presents the work of artists from different disciplines, including design, typography, drawing, music and photography. These activities aim to allow participants to discover the language of art through games and experiments. The programme is supplemented by activities for families, such as animated tours of the centre’s exhibitions and art workshops where children and adults can learn and try out new artistic techniques together.

In 2020, one of the exhibitions held at the centre was ‘Sobre este caos construiré mi casa’ by the Democracia art collective, which consisted of a construction game made from wooden pieces that also served as printing stamps.

Although the activity was suspended when the museum closed on 13 March, it resumed on 16 June with safety measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in place.

In total, 2,354 teachers and 239 students participated in the initiatives organised by the Centre d’Art la Panera in 2020.
